A Special Time, Special Needs
Jarrow FORMULAS® Preg-Natal®+ DHA is designed to support women’s needs during that special time when the mother is eating for two. During pregnancy, the body needs more of virtually every nutrient -- everything, that is, but more empty calories.
During pregnancy, it is estimated that 75,000 calories are needed for the baby, roughly 300 to 400 additional calories each day and even more during the last trimester. With this, however, pregnancy requires a higher than usual nutrient-to-calorie ratio. The excessive weight gain associated with overconsumption of “empty” calories can exacerbate gestational diabetes (the tendency for the mother’s blood sugar levels to rise during pregnancy) and, at the same time, short change the developing baby.
Optimal health for mother and child during pregnancy requires three things: a well-balanced diet, proper exercise and, for added insurance, support from a comprehensive and scientifically formulated nutritional supplement. Which supplement? Preg-Natal + DHA, of course.
Traditional Solutions
In Preg-Natal + DHA, modern nutritional knowledge is paired with traditional herbal wisdom to yield maximal benefits. These are especially useful when accompanied with proper dietary changes.
Morning sickness and nausea along with constipation are the typical problems associated with pregnancy. One explanation for the first two symptoms is that, over the course of the night during the early stages of pregnancy, the liver must be particularly active to eliminate toxins and the newly elevated levels of hormones. Fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine and many other substances may increase the burden placed upon the liver. Upon awakening, the biliary waste products of the liver’s activity must be eliminated from the system, and this can result in nausea. Preg-Natal + DHA includes ginger root extract, long used in various traditions to settle the stomach.
Including adequate fiber in the diet, especially from fruits and vegetables, greatly aids in the removal of these liver waste products. Nutrients that support the liver, such as the vitamins B-6, C and K, can improve the organ’s ability to process toxins. Increased fiber intake also improves bowel function, which is often compromised during pregnancy.
Safeguarding the Fetus
Folic acid is now accepted as being important in preventing neural tube birth defects. Needs for folic acid may double during pregnancy. Extra folic acid is therefore included in the formula to supply the demands for DNA synthesis in fetal tissue and because this vitamin is important for the production of red blood and neurological development.
Preg-Natal+ DHA goes beyond other formulas by supplying two other especially important nutrients: choline and DHA (docosahaenoic acid). Choline is important for the neurological development of the fetus. DHA is one of the essential omega-3 long chain fatty acids that are important compo-nents of all cell membranes. Long chain fatty acids are important components of all cell membranes.
The brain, the most membrane-rich tissue of the body, is particularly vulnerable to disruptions in fatty acid metabolism. (Fats account for 60% of the non-water weight of the brain!) Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly important to the neurological development of the fetus. Indeed, DHA has been shown to be important for the proper development of the brain, retina, optic nerve and nervous system more generally. A deficiency during pregnancy and the early years of an infant can have lasting effects. For instance, boys who develop attention deficit disorder typically show deficiencies in DHA, another indication of the importance of this fatty acid to the brain.
Michael A. Schmidt, author of the book Smart Fats, argues that a “changing ratio of fatty acids appears to have significant implications for brain function.” He presents evidence that changes in our food preferences and in the processing of fats over the past 75 years have caused an 80 percent drop in Americans’ omega-3 fatty acid consumption. As Schmidt points out, “it has been estimated that years ago, our diets contained omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in about a one-to-one ratio (1:1),” and “scientists believe this was ideal for human brain function. Today, the ratio is estimated to be from 20 to 30:1.” This imbalance in our modern consumption of fatty acids can have unfortunate effects upon the development of brain structure and function. Preg-Natal + DHA is designed to help the expectant mother to supplement with the omega-3 fatty acid which is most important for the neurological development of the fetus. The DHA in Preg-Natal + DHA comes from ultra purified fish oil, and is processed by molecular distillation.
Supplementing the Minerals
Mineral intake during pregnancy is extremely important for the quality of the bones and the teeth for both mother and child later in life. Calcium needs increase by more than 50% during pregnancy, and supplemental calcium must always be balanced with additional magnesium, as it is in this formula.
Iron and zinc are two other minerals that are crucial during pregnancy. Both minerals are important for the mother and fetus to support the blood and the immune system. Needs may increase 50 to 100% during pregnancy.
If the needs of the growing fetus are not met by the diet, minerals must be drawn from those stored in the mother’s body. It therefore makes good sense during pregnancy to supplement with Preg-Natal + DHA to ensure an adequate intake of important minerals. This formula supplies 100% or more of the suggested daily intake of calcium, magnesium, iron, iodine, selenium, copper, manganese and chromium.
More Than Just A Complete Formula
Preg-Natal + DHA is a complete multi-vitamin and mineral formula for the period of pregnancy and lactation. It includes the full B-complex of vitamins in the higher potencies which are important to the woman eating for two. It also includes vitamin K to support proper blood clotting and skeletal health, as well as natural vitamin E to enhance free radical protection against excessive oxidation. Vitamin A is safely supplied as a mixture of vitamin A palmitate and natural marine beta-carotene. Finally, Preg-Natal + DHA includes the carotenoid lutein to offer particular antioxidant protection to eye tissues.
