ZYFLAMEND® – and recent Independent Research on Prostrate Cancer

The Vermont-based supplements company won commendation from no less than Columbia University in 2005 when the university’s Department of Urology studied New Chapter’s Zyflamend® herbal extract preparation and found – according to a news release at the company’s website (www.new-chapter.com) – that  it did indeed “[suppress] the growth of prostrate cancer cells.

“The data,” the release continued, “...showed Zyflamend®... has the ability, in vitro, to reduce prostrate cancer cell proliferation by as much as 78 percent and to induce cancer cell death or apoptosis.”

NEW CHAPTER and the Environment

There’s more to New Chapter than just its supplements. In August 2006 New Chapter received huzzahs from no less than the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and that state’s Small Business Development Center, naming New Chapter an Environmental Partner in the Vermont Business Environmental Partnership.

According to the release announcing the honor, New Chapter received the environmental “atta boy!” for its “[n]oteworthy accomplishments includ[ing] consolidating shipments to minimize vehicle miles traveled and green house gas emissions, installing energy saving measures like occupancy sensors and programmable set-back thermostats, utilizing ‘green’ cleaning products, and implementing new technologies to reduce electricity usage of their information systems infrastructure.”
In addition, the release continued, the company “supports hundreds of small family organic farms and runs a Demeter award-winning ‘bio-dynamic’ organic ginger and turmeric farm in Costa Rica. The company also raises money to help protect and conserve the Children’s Rainforest in Costa Rica.”

NEW CHAPTER’s mission

Husband-and-wife team Paul and Barbi Schulick, started New Chapter in 1982. “Since 1982, our mission, our passionate commitment, has been producing the finest probiotic nutrients and herbal formulations in the world,” their website states. “Our purpose is to create the finest products that are truly natural, made of 100% real food and herbs. The company believes in the efficacy of organic fruits and vegetables so wholeheartedly that in 2005 it became the first supplement company to voluntarily have its multivitamin probiotics line reviewed and approved to the USDA’s National Organic Program standards by a third-party, USDA-accredited certifier. (The USDA does not regulate supplements under the NOP because most supplements are not considered food.)
“Consumers want to be assured that they are purchasing products that are truly organic,” New Chapter president Tom Newmark said in a news release, "but regulation is sorely needed if we plan to expand the organic movement.”
