Magnesium is an essential mineral, playing a key role in over 300 enzymatic reactions in metabolism. The reactions include those involved in the Krebs cycle (one of the body's energy production systems), energy storage, the breakdown of fatty acids, protein synthesis, DNA metabolism, the relaxation of voluntary and involuntary muscle tissue, neurotransmitter activity, and hormone regulation. Magnesium is stored primarily in the bones and plays a role in the absorption of calcium by the bones.

Source Naturals Magnesium Malate, 90 tabs within category: Magnesium

Magnesium is a woefully underused nutrient, with substantial benefits in the health of the heart and especially the bones.  That's why you often see magnesium paired with calcium in supplements.  Another reason is that both calcium and magnesium take up a lot of space in a pill; most one-a-day multivitamins do not supply enough, so people often look to outside supplements.

There's a lot of talk about a 2:1 calcium:magnesium ratio, but to our knowledge, there is no research that explicitly supports this.  Still, it seems reasonable.  Bear in mind, however, that most of us consume way more calcium than magnesium in our diets, heavy on the dairy and fortified orange juice (calcium), light on the nuts and seeds and whole grains (magnesium).  If this is the case, you might look to supplement additional magnesium and less calcium to bring your total daily intake into balance.

There are dozens of different kinds of magnesium out there:
  • Magnesium oxide is the least expensive form, as well as the poorest absorbing.  And poorest absorbing means more stays in the gut where it's more likely to cause loose stools.  (That being said, magnesium oxide can be quite useful for constipation).
  • Magnesium citrate and amino acid chelate are two significantly better forms.
  • Magnesium glycinate and aspartate are considered premium.
