Progesterone Cream

Simply put, there are two major female hormones that are in constant ebb and flow with each other: estrogen and progesterone.  Okay, so that's a huge oversimplification -- the general idea is still correct!

John Lee, M.D., originally coined the term "estrogen dominance" to refer to a situation where there's not enough progesterone to counterbalance estrogen.  According to Lee, symptoms of estrogen dominance may include infertility, the discomforts of PMS and menopause, compromised bone health, and an increased risk of certain cancers.

Progesterone cream may be useful in estrogen dominance, since progesterone can absorb through the skin straight into the bloodstream.  (See also chaste tree berry/vitex).

There are two common misconceptions about progesterone cream.  First, although progesterone can be made from wild yam (Dioscorea villosa), this only happens in a laboratory; we can not make progesterone from wild yam in our bodies.  And secondly, a number of generally well-respected scientists and organizations have recently confused bio-identical natural progesterone with the synthetic progestins found in birth control pills.  They are not the same!  And there's no reason to believe that the cautions concerning synthetic progestins would apply here.

For more information, anything written by John Lee comes highly recommended.  (Author's note: I had a chance to meet John Lee briefly less than half a year before he died.  Even in his mid-70's, he was vibrant and eloquent, and extraordinary individual).
