Prenatal Nutrition

During pregnancy (as in the rest of life) nutrition isn't simply a matter of taking the right pills -- and then washing them down with a double-cheeseburger, 64-ounce diet coke, and large fries.  Nutrition is, first and foremost, about what we eat
 
That being said, a good prenatal multivitamin is advisable, as it provides a safety net for our diet.  It is for this reason that we do not endorse stand-alone folic acid supplementation.  Yes, folic acid prevents birth defects, and yes, you should be getting some.  But it should be part of a comprehensive prenatal multi, not the only thing you take. 
 
In addition to a good prenatal, we also strongly recommend fish oil supplements.  Numerous studies have shown that, when the mother takes fish oils, the baby comes out smarter -- insofar as you can measure intelligence at 6 months, or 4 years.  Many authorities recommend beginning prenatal nutrition a few months before conception, and continuing it through nursing.
