Prenatal Multivitamins

Both the Centers for Disease Control and the National Academy of Science Institute of Medicine both recommend a minimum of 400 mcg folic acid daily before pregancy.  Other, less conservative authorities recommend double that amount. 
 
Most -- but not all -- prenatal multis cover the basics well enough.  The two things you should look for are calcium and magnesium.  Both take up a lot of space in a pill, so many multis do not supply a lot.  If the prenatal you choose is low in either of these, you should make sure you're getting enough in the diet.  And if not, either eat more, or look to supplements.
