Alpha-lipoic acid is one of our best antioxidants, and for a number of reasons:
 
  1. Alpha-lipoic acid is both water- and fat-soluble.  It can get to places in the body other antioxidants simply can not.  It appears to be especially valuable in the eyes and nervous system
  2. Alpha-lipoic acid even functions as an antioxidant in our mitochondria -- the energy-generating "engines" of our cells.  Maintaining the health of our mitochondria is crucial to healthy aging.
  3. Alpha-lipoic acid can regenerate glutathione, the body's most important naturally-occurring antioxidant in the liver and lungs.
  4. Alpha-lipoic acid is more than just an antioxidant!  It also appears to have a slight insulin-mimicking effect, tending to lower high blood sugar. 
Alpha-lipoic acid is one of our very most versatile nutrients.  Unlike almost every other antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid isn't limited to just watery or fatty tissues.  It can go almost anywhere in the body: everywhere from the mitochondria (the energy-producing "engines" of the cells), to the fluids inside the eyes.
