Omega-3 Fish Oils

Omega-3 fish oils basically do two things in the body:
  1. They help the body control inflammation.  Considering how many of our "big" diseases are at least partially caused by inflammation -- cardiovascular disease, arthritis, Alzheimer's, osteoporosis, and cancer, just to name a few -- the potential for fish oils to promote across-the-board health are profound.  There was even a double-blind study where fish oils reduced sunburn!
  2. Fish oils appear to regulate mood.  There's a lot of solid research with fish oils and depression; and a fair amount on bipolar disorder, agresssive behavior, attentional issues, eating disorders, etc., etc.
A few things you should bear in mind before buying and taking fish oils:
  1. Contamination with mercury, PCBs, etc., is a real issue.  Insist on a brand that undergoes extensive testing for these and other toxins.
  2. The amount of fish oil you take is not a measure of its strength.  Instead look for the amount of EPA and DHA, the two active components of fish oil.  Some brands are more concentrated than others.  Furthermore, while many older references still cite DHA as the important factor, it simply is not (with a few exceptions: prenatal and infant nutrition, LDL particle size).  It's the EPA that reduces inflammation and regulates mood.
  3. Many people claim that flax oil is a reasonable substitute for fish oil.  But flax oil does not contain EPA or DHA.  Instead, it contains a precursor that the body can convert to EPA and DHA... but it doesn't always do this very efficiently.
  4. If you actually look at the clinical research with fish oil, it almost always uses a higher dose than is recommended on the back of a typical bottle.
