Nitric Oxide

Nitric oxide is best known as a toxic component of smog, but recent scientific discoveries have shown it to be a biological compound of immense importance. As a supplement, nitric oxide should be considered as part of advance training. It works due to relaxing blood vessels, which helps keep arteries flexible and boosts blood flow......more about Nitric Oxide.

More About Nitric Oxide:

Nitric oxide is a molecule that appears to be central to both the failure process and survival mechanisms that are invoked when heart failure is imminent. As a supplement, it is involved in oxygen transport to the tissues, the transmission of nerve impulses, and other physiological activities. It is a relaxant that allows blood vessels to open up or dilate, bringing increased blood flow and swelling of tissues. Nitric oxide is not purely a good thing, since too much of it can contribute to severe medical problems.

Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator that is produced by several cell lines in the body, including endothelial, neural, and glia cells. It plays a central role in controlling the circulation of blood and regulating activities of the brain, lungs, liver, stomach and other organs. Nitric oxide is used to control blood pressure, fight off invading bacteria, and communicate between nerve cells. It is  made naturally  in the human heart, and it plays a role in regulating the heart's pumping action and in regulating blood pressure.

Nitric oxide is considered such an important chemical in the body that the journal Science named it the "Molecule of the Year" in 1992, and in 1998 three scientists won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for researching its role in the body. It is a fairly short-lived molecule (with a half-life of a few seconds) produced from enzymes known as nitric oxide synthases (NOS). Other natural pathways include it being synthesized from arginine and oxygen by various nitric oxide synthase enzymes and by sequential reduction of inorganic nitrate.  Nitric oxide is released from nitroglycerine to imitate the L-arginine source of the molecule,  however the pathway is still a bit of a mystery. Nitric oxide is more agile, has a higher affinity for hemoglobin and perhaps most importantly can normalize the charge of hemoglobin S. Nitric oxide is also produced by cells lining the arterial walls to relax the underlying smooth muscle and increase blood flow. It is an important non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) neurotransmitter in various parts of the gastrointestinal tract.

Nitric oxide is intimately involved with red blood cells in blood flow regulation opens up huge new fields of research.
