Neuropathy |
Neuropathy is defined as abnormal functioning of the nerves, often due to some type of damage. People may feel a tingling like pins and needles, or outright pain. There are dozens of different kinds of neuropathy. Diabetes can cause it. Glaucoma causes it in the optic nerve of the eye. Neuropathy is a side effect of some drugs. Some forms of neuropathy are very difficult to reverse once they've set in.
Diabetic neuropathy is caused when high blood sugar damages nerves over years and even decades. Obviously, it helps to get to the root of the problem by lowering and stabilizing blood sugar through diet, excercise, drugs, and supplements. There has also been some research linking the antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid, with benefit. Alpha-lipoic not only appears to help protect the nerves directly, but it also helps our bodies control high blood sugar.
Beyond that, there's research linking methylcobalamin (an active form of vitamin B-12), to benefit in various kinds of neuropathy, including diabetic. Lion's Mane mushroom has been shown to increase levels of Nerve Growth Factor in vitro, implying it might be of some help. Same with the amino acid acetyl-l-carnitine arginate.
It's also worth investingating two other options:
- 1) acupuncture; and
- 2) capsaicin (or hot pepper) creams have been clinically proven quite effective in many types of neuropathy.
