Mood

Unhappiness is a part of life (although some Buddhists we know might disagree...)  But sometimes unhapiness can exist completely out of proportion with our circumstances.  Then it gets called depression.

Depression is one place where pills (pharmaceutical and natural) can often take a backseat to therapy, exercise, and that old favorite called "making a change in our lives."

That being said, natural medicine does have a lot to offer.

Fish oils are often the first line of defense.  Just bear in mind, they take a month or two to start working, and you often need to take more than it suggests on the back of the bottle.  The lowest dose we've ever seen in a research trial that has been shown effective has been 1,000 mg a day of EPA (the mood-raising compound in fish oils).  Fish oils are great because of the many positive side benefits, and the fact that they appear safe with pharmaceutical antidepressants.

SAMe looked very impressive in a number of European trials, although again here it appears the clinical doses are higher than recommended on the packages -- 800-1600 mg a day.  SAMe does seem to work faster than fish oils.

The herb, St. John's Wort, has been consistently effective in clinical trials with mild-to-moderate depression, but disappointingly ineffective in more serious depression.

5-HTP, as a direct precursor to serotonin (the brain's "happy and satieted" chemical), can also be very helpful, although it should not be taken together with pharmaceutical antidepressants.
.....more about Mood.
