Jarrow Formulas Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is from purified fish liver oil and is free of Vitamin A. Fat soluable Vitamin D3 is converted by the kidneys into the hormone calcitriol, the activated form of Vitamin D3 which affects a variety of target tissues including bone, intestine, muscle, brain, skin and immune system cells. Calcitriol enhances calcium and phosphorus absorption and stimulates the synthesis of osteocalcin, an important structural protein in bone. Also, calcitriol is involved in proper cell differentitaion (changing cell function).

Suggested Usage: For adults take 1 softgel per day with a meal or as directed by your qualified health consultant. Do not take more than one gel per day without medical supervision.

Technically speaking, vitamin D is not actually a vitamin.  A vitamin, by definition, is something we can not make in our bodies; we must obtain it through diet.  Yet we do make D when sun hits our skin.  Or at least we can...  Those of us living in northern climates, or with darker skin, or who don't get out much may still want to supplement.
 
In fact, we've seen dose recommendations for D jump through the roof in recent years, as much from mainstream doctors and scientists as from their more "alternative" counterparts.  Recent papers in both the New England Journal of Medicine and The British Medical Journal have shown that the standard 400 i.u. dose is insufficient to prevent fractures, whereas double that amount appears effective. 
 
But D isn't about helping us absorb our calcium.  New research suggests D may also help with chronic pain, muscle weakness in the elderly, issues with mood, and auto-immune disorders.  Additionally, there's compelling epidemiological data that implies a very significant role for D in cancer prevention.  For more, see this review.
 
There are two forms of vitamin D, D2 (ergocalciferol), and D3 (cholecalciferol).  To make a long story short, D3 is better, especially in the long term.  (D3 is the type of vitamin D we find in most foods, and the kind we make in our own bodies).  Furthermore, D3 has been tested in doses as high as 4,000 i.u. a day for five months with no signs of toxicity.
