Jarrow Vision optimizer(90 Caps) within category: Bilberry and Lutein

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a European relative of the American blueberry.  As the legend goes, British pilots during WW II ate bilberry jam to improve their vision for night runs into Germany.  It's not entirely clear if this actually happened, or if the story is simply good marketing.

Regardless of bilberry's history, the question is, does it work?  To be honest, the research on improving night vision (the claim made for the WW II pilots) appears weak at best.  There is evidence, however, that bilberry extracts can help prevent damage to the eyes as we age, in terms of macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts.  Most of the evidence here is circumstantial, or from animal studies, or from poorly-controlled human trials.  But the rationale, at least, is sound.  I wouldn't be surprised if, when people finally got around to researching it, bilberry turned out to shine.

Lutein is a yellow pigment found in marigolds, kale and other tough leafy greens, egg yolks, corn, persimmons, and other dietary sources.  Inside the eye, lutein almost acts like "internal sunglasses," filtering harsh light that would otherwise damage the delicate tissues inside the eye.  In three published trials with macular degeneration, lutein supplemnts didn't just slow down the disease but actually improved people's vision.  The research on lutein and cataract prevention, on the other hand, is a little less solid, but it also points to a protective role.

Lutein and bilberry are also nice because, as antioxidants, they can be expected to have a broad spectrum of side benefits, lutein in particular in terms of cardiovascular health.

Beware multivitamins that claim to include lutein and/or bilberry.  There are a lot out there, but very, very few provide more than a fraction of a clinical dose.
