Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

There is an official definition of IBS, but that doesn't always matter.  Sometimes it seems like IBS has become a catch-all diagnosis for pretty much anything effecting the bowel that the medical profession can't quite figure out.  Nevertheless, the official definition of IBS is that there are alternating periods of diarrhea and constipation, without any structural change to the bowel itself.

Stress almost always makes IBS worse, but interestingly, anti-stress drugs rarely seem to help.  Yoga, meditation, and relaxation techniques, on the other hand, are often quite valuable.  It's unclear what the role of anti-stress herbs might be.

A naturopathic approach to IBS should start, first and foremost, with stress reduction.  It's also worth experimenting with different foods, seeing if you're especially sensitive to anything.  Many people also find probiotics to be helpful.  Fiber supplements can also be valuable, as they can both promote regularity and help with loose stools.

Probably the most important herb for IBS is peppermint.  The essential oil of peppermint relaxes spasming smooth muscles on contact -- including the smooth muscles that line the gut.  The problem is, peppermint oil will also relax the muscles that hold acid in the stomach, sometimes causing a problem with reflux.  For this reason, it's important to look for an enteric-coated peppermint capsule.  The enteric coating insures that the capsule won't dissolve until the peppermint leaves the stomach and enters the intestines.
