Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance is a big topic these days. Not only is type II diabetes a burgeoning epidemic, but we're hearing more and more about a the so-called "syndrome X" or "metabolic syndrome," which links chronic high blood sugar with insulin resistance, high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, and obesity (especially belly fat).

The idea with metabolic syndrome is this: when your blood sugar stays too high for too long (and we're talking months and years), the insulin our bodies makes to lower blood sugar stops working -- our cells basically start to ignore it, a condition called insulin resistance -- meaning both our insulin and blood sugar levels remain high.
