Hair

The mineral, silica, is known to strengthen hair, especially where there are split ends and hairs breakings.  Silica is the one supplement here we feel very confident about.  Biotin is often recommended for the same purpose, although the research primarily has to do with cows' hooves.  We're not entirely sure how effective biotin will be.

Another supplement we're not entirely sure of is the Chinese herb He Shou Wou (Polygonum multiflorum), often mistakenly called fo-ti.  Ancient Chinese tradition (and a great deal of modern marketing) claims that this herb will restore vigor and color to the hair.  We'd love to hear from all of you what your experiences have been!

Male pattern baldness is caused by increased conversion of testosterone into its more agressive cousin, dihydrotestosterone, in the hair follicles.  It's interesting to note that both the mineral zinc, and the herb saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) have been shown to inhibit this conversion.  Both also appear to be valuable in dealing with benign prostate enlargement.  It's unlikely either will have a major impact on male pattern baldness, however (although there was a very intriguing, but very small study with a saw palmetto lotion).  Nevertheless, they may be worth a try.

If you're hair starts falling out all of a sudden, it's worth ruling out a more serious medical cause.  Thyroid dysfunction, for example, and certain drugs, can cause hair to fall out.  Insufficent nutrition, especially after pregnancy, may also be an issue.
