Are there pills we can take to make us smarter?

Well, that depends on what we mean when we say "smarter."  There are certainly herbs that have been shown to reduce the effects of stress or sleep deprivation on our ability to think clearly.  There are supplements that seem to help people have less "senior moments."  And others that appear to help us process information better, or help us hold onto new memories longer.

Granted, much of the research has been done in folks with diagnosable problems, and it's not always clear what we can extropolate from that to healthy folks.  Still, there are many that are at least worth a try.  Here are three in particular:

1) The herb, Rhodiola rosea (Arctic Root) has been shown to help the brain survive, and even thrive, under stress.  One study looked at med students during their finals.  The ones who took Rhodiola instead of placebo did better on all sorts of stress and thinking tests -- and did better on their finals.  Another study looked at people proofreading a number of documents over 24 hours.  The ones who took Rhodiola instead of placebo made a lot less mistakes -- especially as the day wore on and fatigue began to take its toll.

2) Phosphatidylserine (or PS) is a phospholipid, a special type of fat found in cell membranes throughout the body, especially in the brain.  Phosphatidylserine appears to help general functioning of the brain in old folks and young, with problems and without.

3) Bacopa monniera (or "true Brahmi," "water hyssop") is another great brain herb.  Bacopa has been shown to improve school performance in young children, and to improve memory in 40-65-year-old adults.  It appears to improve the rate at which we process new information, and the amount of time we hold onto information we're trying to remember.  (The author has personally used Bacopa, and found it very, very useful).
