There's no one thing that garlic does extraordinarily well (except for, perhaps, when you fry it up with some nice extra virgin olive oil, basil, oregano, a little romano cheese...).  No, the nice thing about garlic is that it does dozens of things.
 
So if your only concern is getting over that cold or flu, perhaps look elsewhere.  But if you want help with the cold or flu, plus want to drop your blood pressure a few points, plus give your liver a hand, plus reduce heavy metal toxicity a bit, etc., garlic is your herb. 
 
Bear in mind, garlic pills really aren't that concentrated.  If you can handle chewing up a few cloves of the fresh stuff, you'll be doing every bit as well.
