Eczema and Psoriasis

Eczema (or "atopic dermatitis") is basically an allergic response manifesting in the skin. This doesn't necessarily mean it originates in the skin, however. Oftentimes undetected allergies in the diet can play a major role. In chronic cases, it's definately worth exploring this issue with an elimination diet. It's also worth looking at what you might be coming in contact with. Are you using a detergent with perfumes and dyes? Are you being exposed to any sorts of fumes in your workplace or home? Could you be allergic to your pet?

Beyond lifestyle changes, the supplements used for eczema are generally the same as those used for allergies.

Psoriasis is quite a bit more complicated. There may be issues of impaired protein digestion, gut dysbiosis, lowered liver function, and less-than-ideal cell-to-cell communication among the cells in the skin. Without going into too much detail, the herbs sarsparilla (Smilax officinalis), and Coleus forskohli may both be helpful. (There was a very positive study published on sarsparilla and psoriosis in the New England Journal of Medicine -- in 1942). In theory, probiotics and liver-cleansing herbs could be of use, too. And don't forget to get some sunlight on that skin!
