Digestive Enzymes

Okay, here's some Biology 101 for you: enzymes are "proteins that catalyze biochemical reactions."  But what exactly does that mean, and why is it relevant to digestion?

The act of digestion starts with chewing, but from there on, it's all about chemical reactions, reactions that break large food molecules into smaller ones.  Digestive enzymes help these reactions take place.  In short, digestive enzymes help with digestion.

If all goes well, we produce plenty of our own digestive enzymes.  Raw foods supply some of their own.  But as we get older, or as our diets get richer and heavier and more highly-processed, we may find ourselves more and more in need of a little help.

Digestive enzymes are worth trying for any sort of garden-variety indigestion, especially for the occasional indigestion following a girdle-busting 5-course dinner.  They're also useful with gas and bloating.

At risk of pointing out the obvious, digestive enzymes should be taken with meals.
