Cholesterol and Triglycerides

Perhaps the most important point to make about cholesterol is this: on average, only 25-33% of the cholesterol in our bloodstreams is from cholesterol we actually eat.  The rest we make in our livers, often in response to foods that we've been traditionally taught are good for the heart because they don't contain much cholesterol!  Starchy and sugary refined foods low in protein and fiber are prime culprits, as are cholesterol-free trans-fats.

Two of the best ways to lower cholesterol naturally are fish oils and fiber.  Yes, there are other supplements which are usually more effective at flat-out lowering cholesterol, but fish oil and fiber are great because of all the dozens of side benefits.

Of course the list of cholesterol-lowering supplements is nearly endless.  A few standouts include:
  •  Red yeast rice: A natural source of statins (compounds similar to the active ingredients in Lipitor, Zocor, etc.)  It inhibits cholesterol production in the liver.
  • Guggul (Commiphora mukul) is an extract made from the sap of an Indian shrub.  In a number of clinical trials, it has been quite effective lowering HDL and triglycerides, while raising LDL.  Claims that guggul will promote weight loss are intriguing, but unproven.
  • Niacin (vitamin B3) is very effective at lowering cholesterol, but may cause a "niacin flush" in susceptible people.  (A niacin flush is a transient "blush," often with a tingling feeling).  So-called "flush-free niacin" (inositol hexaniacinate) sidesteps this problem.  Time-relase niacin does, too, but there are concerns about liver damage with this form of the supplement.
  • Phytosterols (plant sterols) block cholesterol absorption from the gut.  The foods richest in sterols are nuts and seeds, especially sesame and pistachios.
  • Artichoke extract increases the flow of bile from the liver, which not only helps us digest fats, but also excretes cholesterol.  Artichoke extracts are very popular in Europe, it seems.
  • Vitamin E is also very popular, but most vitamin E supplements do not do what people expect them to.  Before buying vitamin E for heart health, please read this article
