Bone Health

Bone health is about more than just calcium!  In fact, although there's generally more research on calcium, there are often better results in research trials with vitamin D, magnesium, strontium, vitamin K2, and essential fatty acid supplements.
 
Why is this?  Part of it might be that our calcium-rich diets leave little need for additional calcium supplementation.  But bear in mind, bones aren't just solid calcium.  Calcium needs to be incorporated in a protein matrix.  The calcium provides rigidity, while the protein matrix provides resilience.  Without the protein matrix, calcium is like a piece of chalk -- it's hard, but it will shatter on impact.
 
In addition to supplements, there's a lot to be said for weight bearing exercise, even something as simple as walking.  Swimming, on the other hand, while excellent for heart health, doesn't put any weight on the bones, so accomplishes little here.
 
Too much salt, sugar, caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages are bad for the bones.
