Age-Related Cognitive Decline and Dementia |
A stroke occurs when blood flow is interrupted to part of the brain by a clot or a ruptured blood vessel. Blood flow usually restores itself, but in the interim, brain cells may starve to death.
Alzheimer's disease, on the other hand, is more complicated. There is evidence pointing to at least a half-dozen different mechanisms and risk factors. It's interesting that almost all the risk factors for Alzheimer's are the same as those for cardiovascular disease, inflammation, high homocysteine levels, lack of exercise, etc. Additionally, exposure to aluminum is often implicated.
Levels of the neurotransmitter (brain chemical) acetylcholine are often dramatically lowered in Alzheimer's. It may be worth paying special attention to supplements that raise acetylcholine levels: CDP choline, Huperzine A, and DMAE.
While Alzheimer's is a gradual progression, strokes are an acute attack followed by a period of recovery. There are three stages to dealing with strokes: prevention, crisis intervention, and recovery.
-
Prevention: while strokes effect the brain, they originate in the cardiovascular system. Anything to promote cardiovascular health should be useful here.
-
Crisis Intervention: if you think that you or a loved one may have had a stroke -- sudden dizziness, disorientation, loss of muscle control, speech impairment, etc. -- call 911 immediately. Medical treatment within a few hours is crucial. Natural medicine may also be useful here, but it can also be risky: many supplements will interact with the strong, effective drugs at the hospital. There is some evidence, however, that both vinpocetine and acetyl-l-carnitine, given immediately, can help.
-
Recovery: if you choose to take blood thinners now, you must make sure that the supplements you use do not interact with them. Otherwise, most brain supplements can help .....more about Age-Related Cognitive Decline and Dementia. |
